Easing the struggle.
As our dear friend JoJo was nearing the end of his struggle with meningioma, the most common brain tumor in dogs, we struggled to find a way find some meaning in his suffering.
Through 14 years, he had given us so much, and we desperately wanted to find a way to help him live on. In caring for our JoJo, day and night throughout his struggle, we wished there was a way to prevent this painful tragedy from causing suffering to other dogs, and all the people who love them. That is when we came upon the idea to establish a research fund to honor the memory of JoJo, and to raise funds to support research that could help bring about news forms of treatment, or perhaps even a cure.

What is the JoJo Meningioma Research Fund?
It's a fund set up and administered through the University of Illinois Companion Animal Memorial Fund. It is dedicated solely and completely to raise funds for research into the diagnosis, treatment, most hopefully, a cure for meningioma, the most common type of brain tumors in dogs.

Is there a "middle man"?
No. All contributions are sent directly to the University of Illinois. And all funds go directly to research. There is no percentage deducted for fund administration.

Why is it important to find a cure?
Meningioma tumors cause tremendous pain and, although tumors can be surgically removed, they are sometimes impossible to eradicate. Remaining cells often grow back to form other tumors. Radiation and chemotherapy are seldom an easy or perfect solution. In addition, many dogs who suffer from meningioma are older or in poor health, so surgery, radiation and chemotherapy carry too many risks. Better forms of treatment could extend the life span of more afflicted dogs and improve their quality of life.

Will the study only help dogs?
Any dog has the potential to develop the disease. In addition, meningioma tumors in dogs are also very similar to those found in people and cats. So any helpful findings could contribute to helping human and feline sufferers too.

How much can I give?
As much as you feel comfortable giving. No contribution is too small and will be most warmly welcomed. Larger donations will work hard to get research quickly underway.

Can I make my donation in my pet's name?
That would be wonderful! You may also make it in your own name or anonymously if that is your preference.

What happens after I contribute?
You will receive a card from the University of Illinois Companion Animal Memorial Fund thanking you for your donation. Your name (and your pet's if you wish) will be added to a permanent roll of fund contributors.

Can my friends contribute?
We would be honored if you would tell your friends about the JoJo Meningioma Research Fund. Friends who have dogs, cats or human family members who suffer, have been treated or who have expired, from meningioma or other brain tumors may have a special interest in contributing to the fund. Because gifts can be made in the name of a special loved one, it can be a way of making a meaningful tribute to a cherished and valuable life. Gifts may also be made in honor of living persons or pets.

What forms of giving are possible? Are gifts tax deductible? Who should I contact with questions?
Your gifts to the JoJo Meningioma Research Fund are tax deductible. Gifts in forms such as charitable trusts, endowments, bequests or gifts in kind are also welcome. To discuss your preferences, or for more information, contact Kimberly K. Meenen, Assistant Director for Development, College of Veterinary Medicine, Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Affairs. Phone 217 333-2762 Fax 217 333-4628 email trathgeber@cvm.uiuc.edu
